Am I Beautiful?

This morning, Leah came up to me and asked, "Am I beautiful, Mommy?" When I turned around, this beautiful face was smiling at me.....So, what do you think? Isn't she a beauty??!!

Another Year, Another Season

Well, a year has gone by and we are entering another soccer season. This year Megan moved up to the next level (10, 11, and 12 year olds) and Grace is in the same level as last year (8 and 9 year olds). Megan's team is Go Anywhere Puzzles and will be in purple (which just happens to be her favorite color). Grace is on team Gutwein Family Chiropractic and will sport the color light green (Can you guess her favorite color?).

Grace mostly played as a forward in today's game, but she also played as a defender and a midfielder. In this picture, she almost had a goal....she was sooooo close! Grace gets around her defender and heads up field. In a sea of yellow.
These are the "dynamic three," meaning they played either as forwards, midfielders, or defenders at the same time. This pic is taken as they walked back up the field after making one of their goals. Grace is in the middle.Since the girls are on separate leagues this year, I am so thankful (and relieved!) that their games are scheduled back to back. No running from field to field for me this year. Yeah! I can sit and enjoy both of their games.

Megan's level plays on a full-size field and has longer quarters. Instead of rotating positions throughout the game, their coach places them where he feels they'll do the best. This is where they'll be for the season. The nice thing is, they really learn and "own" their position. Megan is left midfielder.

Highlights of Megan's game .... (sorry her pics are a bit blurry and I'm not sure why)With the ball at her feet, she looks for her teammate to pass to. Movin' in for a big kick.
I think Grace took in Megan's game in about every position imaginable in this chair! Both teams won 2-1.

In case you were wondering where Leah was.....she had the privilege to be with Daddy at the office today. Her highlight was getting to sit outside and watch the Grabill Fair parade! She said the following to me this morning, "I like to go to Daddy's office all by me-self!"

The Amazing Race

Last weekend we had some friends over for a wiener roast. Before digging into the food, however, we had our own backyard rendition of The Amazing Race.

Here several teams are bunched up at the first rotation.
The Bolliers conquer rotation no. 2.
Here are Team 1 (Grace and Erik) and Team 2 (Megan and Kayla) running a close race.
Leah was Daddy's teammate.
Pure competition!
Carrie and Claire making their way through the course.
Troy and Jonas were strong competitors!
Grace and her teammate, Erik, were Team No. 1, the first to cross the finish line.
This is after all the teams had crossed the finish line.
Erik wrapped up the evening with music and singing around the fire.
It was a refreshing time with friends!

Our Very Own

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been immersed in the book Torches of Joy, by John Dekker. The book is about the 25,000 Dani tribespeople hidden away in the remote Toli Valley of Irian Jaya, who used only stone tools and had no written language of their own. John and Helen Dekker spent 21 years in Irian Jaya helping the Dani tribespeople discover the gospel of Jesus Christ and their destiny as helpers of other tribes. So, in one generation, the Dani tribe took the always dangerous, sometimes fatal, leap from the Stone Age into the 20th century.

Well, can you guess what the following picture depicts?
These are our very own little missionaries! They packed their "few" belongings into suitcases and small traveling boxes and journeyed from here to there.
I love this part of their creative play, when, on their own accord, they re-enact what they are reading about in history. To me, that's one of the most rewarding parts of homeschooling ~ to be studying a portion of history (or whatever it is) as a family and to see it "carry on" outside of school.

Vacation 2009

How exciting that I get to feature our vacation this year on this, my 100th post! I have been blogging for a year now and want to thank each of you who have joined me along the way as we shared lessons learned and various events of our family's past year. It's been a fun experience!

******************************
After what happened on our vacation last year, I admit that the time leading up to this year's vacation (including getting off the exit, unloading the van, etc.), I was a bit anxious. We were returning back to the cabin, the same place Alex had his accident the year before, for another week of vacation. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, see my Remembering Back post of several weeks ago.

This year, after the van was unloaded and the cabin door closed behind us, I felt much more relaxed. We feel the Lord really blessed our week together as a family. We thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the quality time we had as a family, we had perfect weather, did some new things we had never done, and revisited those "yearly" events we all enjoy doing.

Megan celebrated another birthday at the cabin, and since we were there, she chose "cabin cake" for her cake. (yellow cake, blueberries, and milk or cool whip) Since our day was so full, we actually didn't eat her cake until that night. She had the privilege of picking what we did as a family on her birthday. So, after breakfast, the first thing she did was open her presents and cards. After that, we went to a blueberry farm that is about five minutes from the cabin and picked blueberries (the first time we have ever done that, imagine that!). Yes, we ate ALL these berries in a week (actually, just five days)!
Then we drove to Ludington State Park to the Big Sable Point Lighthouse. We hiked the 2 mile trail out to the lighthouse point. And, around the last bend in the trail, here's the beautiful lighthouse. Even though it was hot, the view was so worth it!
After climbing up the 130 steps to the top of the lighthouse, we were able to walk around the rim of it. A sign on the railing read, "Your shoes are 92 feet off the ground."Instead of hiking back the way we came, we took the way of the beach. It was simply more beautiful and much cooler as the water washed over our feet as we walked barefoot on the sand. No crabbing from Leah was heard on this hike back! She had fun collecting "gems" on the shore, anything she saw of interest to her. Into a baggie they went and stayed until we made it back home. Just this week, the baggie was thrown out. (Its contents: a hair curler, a small piece of driftwood, a bottle cap, a broken piece of plastic.... )
Later that afternoon, we took a spin around the lake. Captain Megs steers the ship. Here Megan and Grace take out the sailboat. Leah went along for the ride. As you can see, it took a bit for them to coordinate their efforts, but they soon got the hang of it.Soon after, they tied a raft onto this same boat, and guess who pulled them. Yours truly. This shot, however, was when we pulled them on the raft behind the pontoon. We (or maybe I should say "I") attempted to get an "organized" family photo on the dunes of Lake Michigan. This is the FIRST photo taken, and can you tell who was NOT cooperating? Before we even had things positioned for this shot, Leah was crabbing. All I can say is, so much for the photo session....SIGH....Thursday evening we drove into Ludington. A tradition every year is going to House of Flavors and getting ice cream. Even though there are so many flavors, each of us seems to have found the one we like, and that's the flavor we stick with year after year.A yearly favorite is walking out to this Breaker Wall Lighthouse and watching the Badger (a ferry boat that crosses Lake Michigan between Ludington and Wisconsin) as it begins its journey across the lake right before sunset. On Saturday, we went back to the blueberry farm to pick berries to bring home (not all for us though). Full (from eating lots of blueberries), hot, and tired.....but happy nonetheless. The rest of the pictures are just memories captured throughout the week. Leah was much braver this year, jumping into the water all by herself.I love this shot.Berries, berries, and more berries.

Enjoying time with my girlies!

Take Me Out....

to the ball game,
Take me out to the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker-jacks.
I don't care if I never get back.
For it's root, root, root for the Tin Caps.
If they don't win, it's a shame.
For it's 1 - 2 - 3 strikes you're out
At the old ball game.

That's the song we sang during the 7th inning stretch of today's Ft. Wayne Tin Caps game against the Beloit Snappers. It was a beautiful afternoon out at the ball park! As a prize from the library's summer reading program, the girls each "read their way" to free tickets. We had perfect seats - just to the 1st base side behind home plate. Along with their free tickets, they also received a free kid's meal (hot dog, chips, and soda) and a Tin Caps folder.

The Tin Caps have a brand new stadium this year right in the heart of downtown Ft. Wayne, so it was exciting to attend at least one home game this season. Some serious onlookers!
This is on the outside deck that goes all around the stadium.
Leah's favorite middle-of-the-inning contest was the water balloon toss, and Megan and Grace both had the same favorite - the Dunkin' Donuts contest (sure wish they had TVs in the restroom :)

Later this evening, we had our own little game of wiffle ball. For the first time, Leah actually showed interest in the game we were playing, and her eagerness to hit the ball was evident. Alex and I were amazed at her little stance, her form, her swing, and the fact that she actually hit the ball! This time up at bat turned out to be a single!
Just look at her concentration!

BTW ~ it's a shame, the Tin Caps lost 3-2.
