Remembering Back

Today, we are remembering back one year ago, when this tree limb fell from up above and hit Alex on top of his right shoulder, breaking his clavicle and puncturing his lung. He then spent the next four nights in the hospital. The timing of all this was just 15-20 minutes after arriving at the cabin for our family vacation. We jumped right back into the van and drove to the nearest hospital, which was just 15 minutes away. We didn't take the time, or even think about grabbing "warmer" clothes with us, but were provided heated blankets to wrap up in while waiting for Alex to have the CT scan done. I don't know if it was nerves or what, but we were freezing!
This is before the surgery to insert the chest tube and set the clavicle. It wasn't long after this picture was taken that Alex was "out" and we spent that time out in the ER lobby.
It was about midnight before Alex was admitted and settled into his room. We spent the first full day of our vacation in the hospital. We only spent part of the next two days with him, as it was too much for the girls, and too much for him in having them there. Here the girls look on as the nurse tightens his brace.
The girls were very in tune with Daddy's pain. Here he is explaining the pain scale chart to them.
Megan took the call Wednesday morning from Alex saying he was ready to be dismissed. That was an exciting day! Grace takes her turn in talking with Daddy on one of our many phone calls to his room.
Outside his room at the hospital, here they are ready to leave.
After arriving back at the cabin, the girls were very attentive to Daddy. We did enjoy the rest of our week at the cabin. Alex was able to sit out and watch the girls play in the water. We even took a very slow boat ride as a family one morning when the lake was very calm.Alex's brother, Tom, and his family came up for the weekend, and here he is checking out the incision site. As you can see, Alex is nicely bruised. One last picture before driving back to Indiana. It was a vacation we would not have chosen, but experiencing what we did that week, and the timing of it, the sovereignty of God was truly impressed upon us! It could've been a lot worse we realize, and we fully believe that God spared our family from experiencing something very tragic.

Thanks for revisiting our journey of a year ago with us today. I'll leave you with a verse that I clung to during that time.

Isaiah 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

A Special Visit

I realize I am a bit behind in my posting, but we are in the middle of our VBS two-week stint and that has claimed most of my time, focus and energy.

Anyway, we had a special visitor at our house last week -- my Mom came to stay with us. We had not seen her (or Dad) since Christmas, which is too long if you ask me!

Prior to Grandma's visit, Leah would frequently ask if this was the day "MaMaw Bocard" was coming. Needless to say, we were all excited for her arrival! This picture was taken within an hour after she came.
Mom had alone time with the girls on Wednesday morning while I went to work. Before "playing," she orchestrated a group clean-up time, so by the time I returned home, the house looked great! Go Grandma!!
And, one last picture before she drove away.

Thanks so much for coming, Mom! We love you! Dad, we'll look forward to seeing you in a few weeks. A visit from you is much overdue, as well :)

Lessons for Ladies

Our church has a ministry/service outreach group that is attended by the "older" women in our church down to the "younger" women. We call ourselves the CARE group (Concerned About Reaching Everyone) and we meet once a month to work on various service projects for local citizens, overseas missions, or those in our fellow church family. This is something the girls and I really enjoy doing together.

This month's topic was proper etiquette and an art lesson. Each young lady was able to create a few watercolor paintings. There was such creativity amongst the entire group! After painting, we moved on to a tea party, complete with delicate china tea cups and saucers. The girls helped fold the napkins you see on the table. They also learned the proper way to pass food, the proper way for "ladies" to sit, proper hand placement, and a gentle encouragement to strive for wholesome talk, which leads to being a blessing to others.Tea anyone? Along with their choice of tea, they were served scones, fresh strawberries, and a dollop of real whipping cream. I think this was our girls' first taste of hot tea, and now I'm positive it won't be their last.

Great concentration you see as Grace and Kayla attempt to get their pinkie in the air....
By the end of the tea party (and several sugar cubes later), Megan and Kayla were a bit slap happy :) In fact, they were the last two to clear away from the table! Great memories!
Before even returning back home, I received several requests to "get our own tea set so we can have more tea parties with friends." I might just have to look into that....

You Never Know...

You never know what a graduation open house might lead to. Well, this afternoon it led to an impromptu field trip! I failed to take my camera along to this open house (silly me:)), but thankfully a friend let me borrow hers. (Thanks, Shar!) So, I was still able to capture the memories!

We have spent the last two weeks between the years of 1914 and 1919, studying World War I. What a thrill it was to walk in the door of the Hoosier Air Museum and see pictures of what we just read about this week! The zeppelin airship was featured just inside the door, as were pictures of navy battleships, airplanes, etc., etc.,

After greeting the graduate and having a bite to eat, we were privileged to experience free admission to the air museum. The only aircraft the kids were allowed to crawl into was this army helicopter.
Since Leah wasn't able to climb up into the aircraft, she simply enjoyed walking around its underside, looking into the telescope lens, and moving it from side to side.

Here they are by the missiles of the helicopter.

This statue showed us some of the protective gear they would have had to wear during chemical warfare.

The girls were fascinated with this woman pilot. Megan said she couldn't imagine flying a plane, especially during a war.

The timing of this was perfect once again. What a joy it is to be able to experience and learn alongside our children! For that, I feel blessed.

Field Day 2009

Today was the annual track and field day for our home school field trip group. It's always an exciting day! After a thunderstorm early this morning, I wasn't sure we'd get to have it, but the Lord held off any bad weather until just after finishing the mile run (which is the last event of the day). We were home literally less than ten minutes when the thunderstorm arrived.

I had the pleasure of being the group leader for all the 9 year olds, Grace's age level. I was, however, able to run around to capture some pictures of Megs during some of my group's "down" time. After a short devotion and prayer, the first event was the 400 m run. Here, Grace and Moriah have just crossed the finish line from running the 400. Grace's time was 1.43 mins. and it qualified for 1st place. At the ball throw, Grace received 3rd place with a throw of 33 feet.
She also received a 3rd place at the high jump.
All the 9 year olds lining up at the starting line for the 50 m, then the 100 m runs.
Grace came in 2nd in both the 50 m ...
... and the 100 m.
Even after running the mile, Grace had a smile on her face! She earned 1st place with a time of 10.21 mins. After running a mile, she asked if she could run some more, so she ran the mile again when Megan's group did it. I'd be pooped, but not her!
On to Megan~~ She took 1st place in both the 50 m ...
... and the 100 m runs. She tied for 3rd at the high jump.
And here she is at the ball throw. With the finish line just in front of her, here is Megan finishing up her mile run. She had a 1st place finish with a time of 10.25 mins.Good job, girls!!!!

End of the Year

Last night was the girls' last class in Tap and Ballet for this school year. It, sadly, was also the last night with their teacher, who is moving to the west coast in July.
Since the main performance this year was The Polar Express back in December, they had a special parents' night to celebrate the end of the year. Their ballet class put on a short rendition of The Beauty and the Beast. Megan and Grace both acted as "plates."

Here is their ballet class. Both are in the front row; Grace is third in from the left and Megan is second in from the right.
Sitting like ballerinas before class.

Mother's Day 2009

The weather was beautiful today! After returning from church, we had the following photo session....Our lilacs are in full bloom and are so thick this year. I love lilacs and have been cutting some every day to have fresh flowers on my counter!

~Megan~

~Grace~

~Leah~

Alex and the girls took care of dinner. When it was time to eat, I was instructed to go out the sliding glass door and walk around to the front door, where a sign was posted that read, Welcome to the Mother's Day Restaurant." Megan greeted me at the door and escorted me through the house and back out onto the deck. One lone table was set up and adorned with fresh cut flowers on top. There I sat and waited to be served. (I wanted to get a picture, but unfortunately was uploading pictures at the time :( )

Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there!
